iranian protestors are risking their lives for you to see this
Resources and call-to-action from the Iranian Diaspora Collective
Over the last few months, I’ve been reporting on and following the protests erupting all over Iran. Despite the monumental human rights violations committed by the current Islamic Regime, Western media has largely stayed quiet. This is especially and unfortunately true of the civil rights movement happening right now.
This is an intersectional revolution—largely led by women—that we should all be paying to. Iranians have been asking folks to support them by drawing awareness to what’s a stake. And for any of them on the ground, it’s at the cost of their lives.
Below, I’m going to do my best to offer resources and summary points from the people I’ve spoken to. One thing I’d like to note is that if you’re looking for legitimate sources, please follow and subscribe to Iranians. Scroll down for some folks who have been posting about this!
What is happening?
In September, Zhina Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish women, was executed by the Iranian’s morality police. What happened was gender apartheid. Following her death, women of Iran have taken to the streets to protest a brutal and totalitarian regime that actively prosecutes minorities in Iran.
Months later, the protests are still ongoing. The Republic has been executing anyone who stands against them. This morning, the Islamic Republic executed Mohsen Shekari, a 23-year-old, via hanging. He was denied a lawyer and tortured into making a forced confession. His execution was aired for all protestors to see.
There are more protestors jailed. It is massively important that we do not let this happen in silence.
What can I do?
Talk about it. The people of Iran are not asking for Western military intervention; they want the international community to stand by them as they fight for the heart of Iran. They are risking their lives for the footages that have come out of Iran. Ask media editors to amplify Iranian voices, share the names of those who have been jailed, and dismantle misinformation when you see.
Here is a helpful guide by the Iranian Diaspora Collective to talk about Iran.
